living in different parts of the country let me adapt to urban life while blending in and making lasting connections. When I moved to a new city for my first job, I initially encountered cultural resistance, but over time honed my emotional intelligence by understanding local mindsets and building strong relationships with colleagues from different regions. This highlighted the importance of emotional awareness, empathy, and adaptability, attributes I've carried forward. In communication, I've learned active listening is vital, especially with people from diverse backgrounds; working with a manager from a very different cultural background required me to adapt my style, and later, working with a geographically dispersed team, I became more attuned to inclusivity and creating an environment where everyone felt valued and heard. Working with diverse colleagues at a global technology company and managing a global team showed me the importance of respecting everyone's culture, identity, and experiences. I've also come to understand the necessity of bias awareness and respecting personal identities; I supported a colleague through a difficult personal journey and helped organise a community initiative promoting inclusion. By fostering a culture of respect, I've learned that everyone deserves a safe space to be themselves, at work and in life. Reflecting on these experiences, the competencies essential for navigating diversity, cultural awareness, adaptability, emotional intelligence, and inclusivity, are intertwined across personal and professional settings. Ultimately, embracing diversity is about building bridges, not walls, and acting empathetically in every situation.
